Green Party builds cardboard casino in Aotea Square
What: The Green Party is installing a cardboard casino in Aotea Square
When: From 7am on Monday 14 October 2013 through to 6pm
Where: Aotea Square, Queen Street, Auckland
Who: Green Party Co-leader Metiria Turei
The Green Party is stepping up its opposition to the Government’s SkyCity deal by taking over Aotea Square this Monday, October 14, installing a cardboard casino of 510 gaming machines and tables, which represent the extra gambling capacity gifted to SkyCity in its deal with John Key.
Aotea Square will be filled with cardboard versions of the 230 pokie machines, 240 automated player stations and 40 additional gambling tables gifted to SkyCity in their deal with the Government.
“We want to show New Zealanders the scale of what the National Government has gifted to SkyCity. It is the equivalent of a whole new casino,” said Green Party Co-leader Metiria Turei.
“The 510 additional gambling machines and tables gifted to SkyCity would be, on their own, the third largest casino in New Zealand.
“The concessions gifted to SkyCity on their own create a casino larger than the Hamilton, Dunedin and either of the Queenstown casinos.
“No-one voted for a whole new casino in Auckland. The National Government’s deal with SkyCity is undemocratic and unconstitutional.
“SkyCity gets a whole new casino without having to go through any of the regulatory process required in law to set up a new casino and they don’t even have to appear before the select committee considering the SkyCity deal.
“We are urging all Aucklanders to come down to Aotea Square and write a message to the Government on the gaming machines. We will then take the cardboard casino to Wellington to present to the Government.”
