Woolston closure shows need for jobs plan

The proposed closure of Independent Fisheries’ Woolston processing plant highlights National’s lack of leadership on jobs and the fishing industry, Labour’s Employment spokesperson Grant Robertson says.

“The proposed closure puts 200 jobs at risk and creates a very stressful period for the workers and their families. The question for them is where will they go and what will they do?

“The company says international competition is causing it serious problems. Part of that can be put down to the high dollar which makes imports cheap and puts barriers up for our exporters. But the Government refuses to take action to make our currency less volatile.

“It also shows there is a need for Government leadership and industry plans. The fishing industry must focus on high quality products caught from the world’s purest ocean and processed here by Kiwis.

“The Government cannot leave the industry to languish. It must take the lead so our fishing industry can be one of the best in the world. That involves working with companies like Independent Fisheries.

“If this plant closes it will be a blow to the fishing industry and the people of Christchurch. The Government needs to be more hands on and support such a vital industry,” Grant Robertson says.
