Question of privilege regarding use of intrusive powers within the parliamentary precinct

The Privileges Committee today presented an interim report on the Question of privilege regarding use of intrusive powers within the parliamentary precinct.

“In examining this question of privilege, the committee has been asked to examine the particular incident involving the release of information from parliamentary information and security systems that led to the question of privilege being referred, and the more general issue of appropriate principles for access to and release of information from parliamentary information and security systems” said Hon Christopher Finlayson QC, the chairperson of the Privileges Committee.

“This interim report sets out our findings of fact in relation to the incident leading up to the question of privilege. Our consideration of the wider matters of principle is continuing. We will report to the House on these matters in due course” said the chairperson.

A copy of the interim report is available on the parliamentary website, at http://www.parliament.nz/en-nz/pb/sc/documents/reports/.

The interim report will be debated in the House tomorrow.
