Government will ignore Monorail
petition at its own peril.
The Government must decline a proposed monorail in Fordland after 28,000 people signed a petition opposing the project, says Labour’s Conservation spokesperson Ruth Dyson.
“Labour's Conservation Spokesperson, Ruth Dyson, has congratulated Robin McNeill, the President of Federated Mountain Clubs, and the people who signed the petition in opposition to the monorail.
“The proposal for the Monorail should be declined as this type of structure and operation is totally inappropriate in a World Heritage area. It would destroy the environment that so many tourists, both local and international enjoy.
“ It is environmentally wrong and financially risky. Taxpayers should not carry the burden of this venture going wrong.
“I urge the Minister of Conservation to show the same courage with this proposal as he did with the Routeburn tunnel proposal and decline the Monorail proposal as well.”
