Lift the Black Out on Sneaky Treaty Negotiations

New Zealand First is calling for an end to the black-out on terms and conditions being considered for the so-called trade deal - the Trans Pacific Partnership.

“The public must be allowed to debate every possible inclusion,” says Leader Rt Hon Winston Peters. “Secrecy is undemocratic.”

“We are in danger of having New Zealand’s rights signed away to global corporations under the guise of free trade. This is much more than a trade deal, it threatens our laws and regulations in all areas, including finance, public health, the environment and worker safety.

“Without a frank and open discussion in New Zealand we are at risk of being tied forever to a treaty that tramples over our democratic values and works in the interests of big business.

“Prime Minister John Key says New Zealand can discuss the terms when the treaty comes before Parliament’s select committee. Utter nonsense. By then a few government negotiators will have signed our rights away.

“The select committee will only be discussing the legislation to implement the treaty.

“New Zealand First is gravely concerned that global corporations will have the right to sue the New Zealand Government , not in New Zealand courts but from outside the country.

“In short, the treaty may give big business the power to demolish any New Zealand laws that stand in the way of giving them a free rein.

“The treaty does not contain a safety value, a measure needed in case there are negative impacts on the partners. There must be a time limit and a reassessment otherwise we are bound to it forever.

“New Zealand First wants debate on the treaty, if not, then the conclusion must be that democracy has been sold out in favour of corporations in the name of globalism,” says Mr Peters.

New Zealand First MPs will take part in the national day of action against the TPP.
