NZTA flyover appeal hugely disappointing

NZTA flyover appeal hugely disappointing

The decision by the New Zealand Transport Agency to appeal the Board of Inquiry’s rejection of the Basin Reserve flyover is hugely disappointing and a massive lost opportunity for Wellington to come together on an alternative plan, Labour’s MP for Wellington Central Grant Robertson and MP for Rongotai Annette King say.

“This is a sad and silly decision by NZTA,” says Grant Robertson.

“The Board of Inquiry report was comprehensive and any appeal is highly unlikely to succeed. All this does is further delay an agreement on how to improve Wellington's transport network,” he says.

“Now is the time for all parties to come together and develop a common alternative proposal,” Annette King says.

“There is now both an opportunity and a willingness in the community to sort this out. NZTA should join that effort, not try to re-fight a battle they have lost,” she says.

Grant Robertson says the appeal is also a failure of leadership from the National Government.

“Labour MPs and councillors will continue to work with community representatives to develop an alternative that will have the support of Wellingtonians so that we have a modern transport network for our capital city,” Grant Robertson says.

Any number of movie examples come to mind, beginning with Rudolf Valentino’s role (over a century ago) as the romantic Arab hero in The Sheik...
