Robertson Formally Nominates for Labour Leadership

A three year programme to rebuild and reconnect the Labour Party as the driving force for progressive change in New Zealand is essential to the future success of the Party, Labour MP Grant Robertson said as he formally submitted his nomination for the Labour leadership contest. He was nominated by Caucus members Kris Faafoi and Rino Tirikatene.

"As we emerge from our heavy election defeat, we must now take the opportunity to listen, to rebuild our movement and be clear about our purpose as a party. Our focus has to be more than just winning elections. We want the public to view us as a relevant and valued part of the community, not just see us asking for their vote at election time."

"Whatever individual policies we have, or whatever leader we have will not be credible to people until they can see clearly and consistently what we stand for, and that we stand alongside them."

"Over the coming days and weeks I will outline my ideas for a three year programme to transform our party into a confident and outward focused movement with an unrelenting purpose to improve the lives of people and deliver opportunity for all."

"We must be seen as the party that is there to support the hopes and aspirations of a wide range of people, and not one distracted by internal concerns and battles. We must demonstrate credibility, unity and competence to earn the trust and confidence of New Zealanders."

"I do not underestimate the scale of this challenge, but I am convinced that we have the capacity to meet it. To do so we do need a new generation of leadership, open to change and focused on the future opportunities and challenges for New Zealand." Grant Robertson said.
