Measures to Protect Against Ebola
New Zealand First is calling on Prime Minister John Key to reassure New Zealanders that all is being done to ensure there is no risk of Ebola being carried into the country.
"Mr Key should outline what new screening measures are being put in place," New Zealand First Leader Rt Hon Winston Peters said.
“Returning travellers who have worked with Ebola patients or those who have travelled in to New Zealand from Ebola-affected areas could unwittingly be carrying the disease. It is up to the government to ensure that adequate screening and advice is available without delay.
“Epidemics will only be avoided by precautionary measures. This is not a time for undue alarm, but we need to take measures as a sensible response to a tragic outbreak of the disease in West Africa so we should not have to be unduly worried.
“We have not always protected our borders previously, not only against diseases affecting humans but also diseases that have hit our primary industries.”
