Report must spur Government into action
The soaring cost of domestic violence and child abuse highlight the need for the Government to prioritise and act on the issue, says Labour's Spokesperson for Social Development, Sue Moroney.
“Findings from the Glenn Inquiry that show the problem is estimated to be costing New Zealand up to $7 billion a year must spur National into actually doing something.
"This ugly problem can’t continue to be ignored. The fallout, not only in monetary terms but in personal and social harm as well, is huge.
"So far the Government has rejected every cross-party approach to domestic violence and child abuse that has been put to it. It urgently needs to reconsider that and put the needs of New Zealanders first.
“While the report calls for more planning and support for services that prevent the harm, we are seeing White Ribbon Day being side-lined by the Government, sexual violence being boasted about on social media and the Government leaving it up to a private individual to fund a major report into the scourge.
“National needs to urgently re-think its stance on cross-party policy in this instance, and step up and take some leadership.”
