Government not meeting its climate target

The Government must front up to the fact that its own advisors are now saying that New Zealand is off target in any transition to a low carbon future, says Labour’s spokesperson on Climate Change Nanaia Mahuta.

“A briefing to incoming ministers from the Natural Resources Sector says ‘ we are off track in that transition ‘ and ‘emissions in New Zealand have increased since 1990 and continue to rise.’

“This can only be seen as a serious warning to the Government, as it is clear that climate change poses a huge risk to our economy and our natural resources.

“As the briefing says, while our emissions are small we still rank 22nd highest in the world.

“We have got to act now to make that move to a sustainable future. The Government has to do more than listen,” says Nanaia Mahuta.
