Nothing New in Phillip John Smith Report
Nothing New in Phillip John Smith Report
Phillip John
Smith exploited a system that should have been fixed two
years ago when the loopholes were identified, says New
Zealand First.
“But instead we now have yet another report telling us the same thing – how many more duplicate reports do we need?” says Corrections Spokesperson Mahesh Bindra.
“The core issue is that the reports are obviously being filed in a cupboard. This better not happen with the latest: the Summary of Multi-Agency Review of Phillip Traynor (aka Phillip Smith) Incident, otherwise there will be more prisoners heading for Brazil or elsewhere.
“That’s because it is still a case of the left hand not knowing what the right hand is doing and no-one taking control.
“Who has the mandate to close the loopholes? We can’t see it in the report. It cannot surely be so loose that several ministers are in charge?
“Recommendations to solve the issue of the lack of information-sharing across government agencies were made in the 2012 Ministerial report on a sex offender being employed as a teacher.
“The lack of action is appalling and the victims’ rights to be notified have been denied. If responsibility had been taken to carry out the 2012 recommendations this latest fiasco with Smith could have been avoided,” says Mr Bindra.
