Taxpayers not suckers when it comes to casino lemon

The Government should not be asking New Zealanders to stump up extra cash to bail out John Key and Steven Joyce’s dodgy SkyCity convention centre deal, Labour Leader Andrew Little says.

"A deal is a deal is a deal. SkyCity offered to build the convention centre. If they can’t come up with what they now say is a shortfall in costs that’s their problem. Taxpayers should not be asked to dig into their pockets.

“Backroom deals and bowing down to commercial interests have been a hallmark of this Government.

“This one was done over dinner in the face of serious concerns from Treasury, the Department of Internal Affairs and the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment. It was signed off with minimal scrutiny, and has locked taxpayers into something they have no control over.

“It’s a lemon, and taxpayers won’t be suckered into providing any more cash.

“John Key needs to rule out any public hand-out right now,” Andrew Little said.
