Stalling on Supergold Card Review Protects Foreign Monopoly
The government is failing to explain its protection of a foreign monopoly on the Waiheke ferry service, says New Zealand First.
“It’s refusal to fairly redistribute the $1.5 million SuperGold Card subsidy to both ferry companies operating on the route is stifling free enterprise,” says New Zealand First Leader Rt Hon Winston Peters.
In Parliament today Associate Transport Minister Craig Foss was scornful of New Zealand ferry company Explore’s decision to operate on the route.
He claimed the company took the risk as a five-year moratorium did not allow new businesses on the route.
“However, the moratorium and the companion transport subsidy review were due to end last year.
“How can businesses plan ahead if the government continues to delay the review. It has now pushed the finish date out till June 2015? Six years is a long time for a review.”
