Don't Blame the Aussies - We’re Just Not Bugtight
It’s Not the Aussies Fault the Fruit Flies Get in – We’re Just Not Bugtight
Don’t blame the Aussies for yet another fruit fly being found in Auckland, says New Zealand First.
“It’s about border protection, and it’s our border, so we have to do the job,” says Primary Industries Spokesperson Richard Prosser. “Leaving it to someone else and then whinging when they get it wrong is simply a cop-out.
“More dogs, more x-rays, more container inspections, more fumigation, and more staff - it’s just so simple but the Minister is holding the purse strings too tight.
“The National government is not putting enough money and resources in to make New Zealand bugtight.
“The Government could start by reinstating the 100% x-ray of incoming hand-held luggage from across the Tasman.
“Good border security protection is the ultimate in securing our agricultural and horticultural industries for the future. Any invasion by pests costs the industry and the taxpayer millions.
“Being on guard against foreign invaders costs money, but in the long run, better prevention is cheap defence.
“New Zealand First urges the government to stop dragging the chain, get the gorse out of their pockets, get their priorities straight, and give the Ministry of Primary Industries every weapon they need to get this sorted,” says Mr Prosser.
