Further fruit fly finding a major concern

The discovery of a second fruit fly in Auckland is a major threat to New Zealand’s horticulture industry, Labour’s Biosecurity spokesperson Damien O’Connor says.

“Every step possible must be taken to eradicate this pest.

“The finding in the Auckland suburb of Grey Lynn today, along with 39 larvae and one pupa in lemons and plums, means this is the first time New Zealand has had a population of the Queensland fruit fly.

“Labour urges local residents to work with Ministry of Primary Industry officials, and recheck their gardens and fruit bowls, to ensure no stone is left unturned.

“We have proven in the past we can eradicated such pests but the Government has to ensure officials are properly resourced to so again,” Damien O’Connor says.
