Safety in Prisons a Major Concern

Safety in Prisons a Major Concern

Staff and prisoners are at risk in Corrections facilities because of the shortage of staff, says New Zealand First.

“Staff are regularly assaulted by prisoners, and prisoner assaults of other inmates are frequent,” says Corrections spokesperson Mahesh Bindra, “No wonder many people do not want to work for Corrections.

Police are investigating the death of a prisoner who died after an incident at Christchurch Men’s prison recently.

“Prisons run by Corrections have specific staff-to-prisoner ratios for the different levels of security which are designed to provide a safe environment for staff and prisoners,” says Mr Bindra.

“However, we understand the ratios are not always possible because there is a shortage of staff.

“If there are not enough staff, prisoners are often locked in cells for long periods, leading to a volatile situation when they finally come out of their cells.

“Staff are under strain having to fill in because of shortages. They are not paid overtime, the excuse being there is not enough money. Not surprisingly turnover rates are high.

“Instead of dodging his responsibility, the Corrections Minister Peseta Sam Lotu-Iiga needs to front up to the issue, and fully resource our prison system.

“The safety of Corrections staff and prisoners is not a bottom line issue, it should be a priority,” says Mr Bindra.
