Time for McDonald’s to upsize work hours

Time for McDonald’s to upsize work hours

Labour is calling on McDonald’s to have more respect for their workers and offer them more guaranteed work hours.

McDonald’s is proposing to guarantee its workers 80 per cent of their rostered hours, Labour’s spokesperson for Labour Issues Iain Lees-Galloway says.

“This offer has been dismissed as ‘a joke’ by the Unite Union representing them.

“These people often work much less than their rostered hours so they still won’t have any certainty they can pay their rent and feed their families each week.

“This follows Restaurant Brands – which owns KFC, Pizza Hut and Carl’s Jr – and Burger King scrapping zero-hour contracts from their employment practises. Restaurant Brands is guaranteeing their workers 80 per cent of the hours they work and Burger King is moving to fixed shifts within the next six months.

“If other fast food giants operating in New Zealand are happy not to use these nasty contracts and can guarantee decent work hours, there is no reason why McDonald’s can’t follow suit.

“Come on McDonald’s, serve your workers up a bit of McHappiness,” Iain Lees-Galloway says.

Note: Iain will join striking McDonald’s workers on their picket line in Auckland today.

Any number of movie examples come to mind, beginning with Rudolf Valentino’s role (over a century ago) as the romantic Arab hero in The Sheik...
