Benefit reforms moving more locals into work

List MP Jono Naylor welcomes the release of the latest local benefit figures which show 144 fewer people on a benefit in the Palmerston North in this March quarter compared to the same time last year.

“Nationally the number of people on Benefits is the lowest we’ve seen since 2009, I’m proud that here in Palmerston North we are supporting the effort.

“When National came to power the welfare system was failing kiwis, twelve per cent of our working-age population was receiving a benefit.

“With the number of New Zealanders on benefits continuing to track downwards, I am pleased to say National’s welfare reforms are working,” Jono Naylor said.

“Moving from welfare into work means a better life, better opportunities, and a brighter future for Palmerston North people and their families.

“There is however still more work to be done therefore we are continuing to help people into work by making available, childcare assistance, training, workplace support, and access to health and disability support services.

“This Government is making a difference by setting expectations, and providing a hand-up rather than a hand-out to empower those wanting to work,” Jono Naylor said.

Nationwide this is the lowest March quarter in six years and is a 3.7 per cent decrease from the March 2014 quarter. Sole parents are the most successful beneficiary group with a drop of 7.2 per cent.
