Firing squad deaths deplorable

The execution of eight men by an Indonesian firing squad is deplorable, Labour’s Foreign Affairs spokesperson David Shearer says.

“New Zealanders do not support the use of the death penalty under any circumstances.

“These people also had 10 years waiting on death row. That is inhumane.

“While Indonesia faces real problems with drug trafficking, executions like these are not a solution. Instead, they will likely diminish Indonesia’s progress on human rights, something that has been acknowledged internationally.

“Surely punishment and rehabilitation are the objectives of a prison term.

“The two Australians, Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran, showed they were able to study and reform themselves in prison.

“Unfortunately for their loved ones we’ll never know what their future contributions to society might have been,” David Shearer says.
