Local MP welcomes Tāmaki housing announcement

MP for Maungakiekie Peseta Sam Lotu-Iiga says he is excited for the future of the Tāmaki area of Auckland following the government’s announcement that its regeneration is to be sped up.

Finance Minister Bill English and Housing Minister Nick Smith announced today that the ownership and management of about 2800 Housing New Zealand properties will be transferred to the Tāmaki Redevelopment Company and a $200 million loan facility will help hasten the transformation of the area.

“With this exciting announcement today, the people in my electorate can be optimistic, for themselves and for the future of their children,” Mr Lotu-Iiga says.

“This redevelopment will breathe new life into the area. This community has history and character. The people who call it home deserve decent houses, modern facilities and job opportunities. Under this plan, they will have the opportunity to get them,” Mr Lotu-Iiga says.

“We know it can be difficult for some people to find affordable homes, whether renting or buying. This next step is warmly welcomed.

“This announcement is about more than just bricks and mortar. It is the realisation of a positive vision for the future by central and local government working together. It is about education, jobs and setting in motion changes that will also benefit the next generation,” Mr Lotu-Iiga says.
