Whānau Ora Remains Costly
Mystery
Whānau Ora remains an unknown to both whānau and administrators, undeserving of its current funding, says New Zealand First.
“The Auditor-General’s report confirms what New Zealand First has known the whole time; no-one knows what New Zealanders are actually getting from the Government’s $137 million Whānau Ora investment,” says New Zealand First Māori Affairs Spokesperson Pita Paraone.
“After four years the Auditor-General has not been able to find a clear description of what Whānau Ora is or what it has achieved.
“Even the CEO responsible for administering Whānau Ora revealed to the Māori Affairs Select Committee earlier this year that confusion remained within government agencies as to what Whānau Ora was, and officials were still trying to adequately explain the initiative four years on from its inception,” says Mr Paraone.
“Whānau Ora has been allowed to fly under the radar for the past four years without any accountability. With the findings of today’s report this can no longer occur as currently the justification for Whānau Ora is just not there.
