Key Backtracks on Promises

Key Backtracks on Promises

Prime Minister John Key has been playing with Northlanders over promises, says New Zealand First.

“He is now going back on his word, and everything he said in Northland,” says New Zealand First Leader and Member of Parliament for Northland Rt Hon Winston Peters.

Mr Key told Northland during the by-election he would delay announcing policies till after the by-election, but this is not going to happen, says Mr Peters. “He is denying he said that as Prime Minister and leader of the government.”

“National is continuing with its form from past decades and neglecting Northland, yet Mr Key stated at the weekend he wants to regain the trust of Northlanders.

The Prime Minister’s Office says Mr Key was not speaking as PM during the by-election, says Mr Peters.

“This is despite all media reports saying otherwise and Mr Key being introduced as the Prime Minister everywhere he went in Northland. He was using ministerial cars and the PM’s bodyguards. Mr Key has been caught out by his own deceit.

“After a public backlash over National’s vote-buying sweeteners – to two-lane 10 bridges, rollout rural broadband, extend mobile coverage and build the holiday highway to Wellsford – Mr Key took exception and refused to announce any more policies saying ‘we’re just going to do them after the by-election’.

“In response to an Official Information Request the PM says the delayed policies were not from the government, but from the Leader of the National Party.

“Adding to this clear picture that the government is backing away from any help for Northland, Transport Minister Simon Bridges says in writing there were never any policies delayed, refuting all reports of Mr Key’s comments.

“This is not only absurd it demonstrates the reality of the Key government, which has been riding on an economy doing well for a short while on milk exports to one country and the Christchurch Rebuild. It is a government that is all talk, but has no interest in planning and putting policies in place for the future.”
