DHB Lawsuit Cost Better Spent Elsewhere
While
the Auckland District Health Board struggles to break even,
an Official Information Act request shows that Auckland's
Medical Officer of Health will spend more than $30,000 of
public money trying to overturn Birthcare Maternity
Hospital’s liquor licence.
“That $30,000 could be better spent on funding vital operations or an additional 1400 nursing hours,” says Spokesperson for Health Barbara Stewart.
“So far, $12,345 (plus GST) has been spent on appeals to the Alcohol Regulatory and Licensing Authority and in the High Court, and another $18,405 (plus GST) has been budgeted for further appeals.
“The DHB should be considering more pressing funding issues rather than lining the pockets of lawyers.
“The liquor license simply allows partners and supportive family members to enjoy a celebratory low-alcohol drink. It is recommended that breastfeeding mothers should not drink alcohol.
“It’s time for this Minister and the DHB to show some common sense and invest this money where it is needed, not on expensive moral crusades,” says Mrs Stewart.
