Govt must listen to public on climate change action
Government must listen to public on climate change
action
The Green Party is
today calling for the Government to listen to the hundreds
of people who called for real climate action at the
Government’s own climate change consultation meetings so
far, ahead of a second meeting in Wellington this
evening.
Overwhelmingly, the public at meetings throughout the country have called for a target of at least a 40 per cent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions on 1990 levels by 2030, and want the Government to take leadership on the issue of climate change at talks in Paris later this year.
“The Government asked for New Zealanders’ views on climate change and they have spoken loud and clear – people want action to cut emissions, not more excuses,” said Green Party Co-leader Dr Russel Norman.
“If the Government wants to dispute this, then they should release the notes from the meetings, notes that show that people want climate action.
“And it’s not just at consultation meetings. Motu produced a report this month that showed 87 per cent of New Zealanders are concerned about climate change and want action. We heard many of their voices at these meetings.
“Green MPs and members have attended most meetings held so far, and we’re dismayed to hear the Government argue that transitioning to green energy alternatives will cost households.
“We all know the real cost if we don’t make a transition to a clean, green economy. But the Government seems to be ignoring the economic benefits of climate action.
“Tonight’s meeting in Wellington has been scheduled because there is such demand and passion for people to have their say on climate change.
“The Government must take our message for at least a 40 per cent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions to climate talks in Paris,” said Dr Norman.
