Government Stripping Regions of Social Services

27 MAY 2015

Government Stripping Regions of Social Services

Social services are disappearing in the regions under National, says New Zealand First.

“Under National there has been a flow of regional closures, including services to veterans and youth provided by the Salvation Army in Kaikohe, Matamata, Wairoa, Waipukurau, Cambridge, Ngaruawahia and Blenheim, says Spokesperson for Social Policy Darroch Ball.

“Now we have Relationship Aotearoa being forced to shut down. It had branches throughout the regions.

“Government support for social services has fallen away under its ‘investment approach’, widely touted as the answer in the past six years. It is obviously not working.

“The Minister for Social Development, Anne Tolley, apparently knows that because in Parliament today she denied it existed.

“National is struggling with social services with Finance Minister Bill English saying a voucher system is on the way, but the Minister also denies that is the case.

“The government has indicated to agencies that it will provide funds for services that focus on government targets – one would have thought working with perpetrators of domestic violence might be up there, but with the end of Relationship Aotearoa there is now a huge gap.”
