Green Party mourns the passing of Peter Conway

The Green Party is mourning the loss of trade union economist Peter Conway, and expresses its deepest sympathies to his family after his death today.

“Peter was a brilliant economist and a kind and gentle person, who will be greatly missed by everyone in the Green Party who had the honour of working alongside him,” Green Party Co-leader Metiria Turei said.

“Peter had experience at the coalface and in the board room and was deeply respected on both sides of the industrial fence, by both workers and employees.

“As Secretary of the Council of Trade Unions, Peter could still be found running a picket line at 3 in the morning, he never shirked the hard work, and never stopped fighting for a fairer New Zealand.

“The Green Party acknowledges the enormous contribution Peter made to New Zealand society and in particular, to the trade union movement.

“Peter had a highly compassionate view about how an economy can work well for everyone and he will be profoundly missed by many who shared in his brilliance.

“Our deepest sympathies are with Peter’s family and friends,” Mrs Turei said.
