Time to Pull Out From Changing the Flag

The government’s failed flag roadshow proves they should pull out from changing the flag now, says New Zealand First.

“The appalling attendance at public hui throughout the country is a sign that New Zealanders have turned their back on the whole process,” says New Zealand First Leader and Member of Parliament for Northland Rt Hon Winston Peters.

“Why should people attend when their opinion on changing the flag to begin with was utterly ignored?

“No one is interested in supporting Prime Minister John Key’s personal crusade to change the flag and waste $25 million, which would be better spent elsewhere. This farce must stop.

“The first question should be: ‘do we want a change?’ Otherwise there’s no point in consulting the public about new designs.

“We have called on New Zealanders who are against the flag referendums to write ‘Keep Our Flag’ (KOF) on the ballot paper, with resounding support.

“This public revolt against the flag roadshow is just another message of disapproval of the government.

“Saying the Flag Consideration Project website has received 650,000 hits doesn’t mean people are actually engaging with the process online either,” says Mr Peters.
