Minister of Corrections’ Report Card Reads Fail

Too many things have gone wrong in Corrections for the Minister to stay in the job, says New Zealand First.

“The government needs to be honest about the performance of the Minister of Corrections Peseta Sam Lotu-Iiga – they will find him wanting, as we have,” says Mahesh Bindra, New Zealand First Spokesperson for Corrections and former Senior Corrections Officer.

“There are too many failures for us to count on one hand but New Zealanders can rest assured that we have been watching closely and it’s not looking pretty for Mr Lotu-Iiga.

“The Minister of Corrections has failed to put victims of crime first, he has failed to keep staff safe and he has failed to control prisoners.

“He’s also failed to assure New Zealanders that private-run prisons are safe, effective and an intelligent use of taxpayers’ money.

“As far as report cards go, the Minister of Corrections has failed on all counts and needs to go – yesterday.

“His incompetence is well-proven, but Prime Minister John Key is irresponsibly allowing ‘Slippery Sam’ to get away with it against the best interests of New Zealanders,” says Mr Bindra.
