Minister must cancel Serco’s contract
today
Today’s top secret meeting with the Corrections CEO is Sam Lotu-Iiga’s chance to cancel Serco’s contract and get back on top of his portfolio, says Labour’s Corrections Spokesperson Kelvin Davis.
“The ongoing scandal at Mt Eden prison has shown the Minister to be totally out of his depth. He doesn’t know crucial information, he can’t tell a straight story. He’s either incompetent or covering something up.
“Now, new revelations of yet another prisoner being bashed means he’s called another top secret meeting just a day after his last crisis meeting with Serco bosses.
“At today’s meeting, he has to decide to drop Serco. They have a multi-million dollar contract with the Government to run Mt Eden prison, and they aren’t delivering what they were paid for.
“Instead of the high quality prison we were promised, we have been given fight clubs, bashings, and inmates carrying shanks around with impunity.
“Serco should never have been given the contract and they’ve got to go. If the Minister doesn’t have the guts to do it after all that’s happened, it’s just more evidence he isn’t up to it,” says Kelvin Davis.
