Serco knew names of attackers for months
The victim of a dropping attack gave Serco the names of his alleged attackers months ago and nothing was done, says Labour’s Corrections Spokesperson Kelvin Davis.
“Alex Littleton had both of his legs broken in February after an assault which saw him thrown over a balcony in Mt Eden prison. In a tape given to his family, he states he told Serco the names of four people who attacked him. Nothing was done.
“When serious allegations are made and the names of the criminals who did it are provided, any reasonable Kiwi would expect action to be taken. Not under Serco though.
“Corrections Minister Sam Lotu-Iiga claims he never knew about this. This shows he is hopelessly out of touch with what is happening in his prisons. He has to go.
“Last week an official Corrections statement mentioned just one attacker, when Serco had been told four names months ago.
“Serco should never have been given the contract to run Mt Eden. They need to lose their contract and Sam Lotu-Iiaga needs to be shown the door if we are going to restore order at our largest remand prison,” says Kelvin Davis.
