No Call to Change the Anthem
Prime Minister John Key is wrong to suggest New Zealand First made a call to change the New Zealand anthem – we did no such thing.
"Unlike Mr Key we do not, at a whim, decide to change an historic emblem, the flag, at a huge cost to the taxpayer, when there is no call from New Zealanders for change," says New Zealand First Leader and Member for Northland Rt Hon Winston Peters.
"But we do respect honest opinions.
"When approached by a reporter yesterday I gave my honest personal opinion that the Labour leader Andrew Little was on some sound ground in describing the anthem as a 'dirge'. That's the end of it.
"Other people will have a different personal view and I respect that."
