National And United Future Snub WWII Veterans
New Zealand First is disappointed that
National and United Future have indicated they will not
support a brief Parliamentary debate today to mark
Saturday’s 70th Victory in Japan (VJ) day, which saw the
end of the Second World War.
“Surely 35-minutes of Parliamentary time is little sacrifice, given 11,625 New Zealanders paid the ultimate sacrifice between 1939 and 1945,” says New Zealand First Defence Spokesperson Ron Mark.
“We are now left with a paper thin line of veterans who are mostly in their 90’s like the last Dambuster raid pilot, Les Munro, who sadly passed away last week.
“Saturday is our country’s last opportunity to honour the few and their mates who were injured or killed. As well as those who survived and returned but have since passed away.
“New Zealand First has honestly reached out to National and United Future, but all they will support, is a motion without debate. Parliament owes those who served a lot more than that.
“It makes me sad and angry in equal measure but it is not too late, should National change its mind. We will be advancing a debateable motion before Question Time today so the ball is in their court,” says Mr Mark.
