National Miserable in Refusing Live Free-to-Air Sports Broadcasts
National has categorically ruled out live, free-to-air sports broadcasts, says New Zealand First.
“The government is refusing to give Kiwis a chance to watch our sportspeople live on screen in their own home,” says New Zealand First Spokesperson on Sport and Recreation Clayton Mitchell.
“It’s magic for many to be able to sit on the couch at 3am in the morning and watch the All Blacks in a World Cup. Others prefer to pop down to their local. It is totally miserable to refuse to give Kiwis the choice.
“National is being unfair to Kiwis who have paid taxes to build state television and who contribute $2.9 million for netball and $3 million for rugby each year,” says Mr Mitchell.
“Clearly this is a government only for Kiwis who can afford to pay for live TV coverage.
“Minister of Broadcasting Amy Adams was arrogant in Parliament today while struggling to respond to questions on the need to give all Kiwis a fair go.
“The Prime Minister wants to see the silver fern on the flag, so why has he not already allowed New Zealanders to see our Silver Ferns free on our state-owned TV during the World Cup, now being played in Australia,” says Mr Mitchell.
