Primary Production Committee to visit free range egg farms

Primary Production Committee to visit New Zealand’s largest caged and free range egg farms

Parliament’s Primary Production Committee is heading to Dunedin tomorrow to visit a number of egg farms in the Otago area.

The committee is interested in understanding any change that may be bought about by the Animal Welfare Amendment Act 2015. The committee will be visiting New Zealand’s largest caged and free range egg farms, as well as a colony egg farm, travelling between Dunedin and Waikouaiti. The committee will also have an in depth discussion with New Zealand’s leading technical expert on layer farming, Lorna Craig, and Mainland CEO and Egg Producers Federation Chairman, Michael Guthrie.

Committee Chairman Ian McKelvie is enthusiastic about the visit. “A number of improvements to the wellbeing of hens have been developed in recent years. The committee is interested to discover how these changes have affected both farmers and their hens.”
