Evidence Doesn’t Back up Cut to Limited Service Volunteers

A successful youth programme has been cut by the government despite evidence that proves its worth, says New Zealand First.

“Places on the Limited Service Volunteer programme, run by the Defence Force, have been reduced from 1500 to 800,” says New Zealand First Spokesperson for Social Development Darroch Ball.

“The Minister of Social Development Anne Tolley claims the scheme has been cut back because youth unemployment is decreasing, but the figures don’t back her up.

“It’s a disgrace. Youth unemployment is the same as in 2010 when the Limited Service Volunteer programme received a boost in funding from this government.

“Ironically, the Minister has noted the programme’s success saying it has contributed to reducing benefit numbers.

“Ministry of Social Development reports show that after four years participants are more likely to be in need of Work and Income assistance, yet the government has cut availability,” says Mr Ball.

“We want to see the number on the programme increased on the basis of strong evidence that reinforces its worth.”
