Productivity Commission report supports Whānau Ora

Whānau Ora Minister, Te Ururoa Flavell welcomes the findings and recommendations of the New Zealand Productivity Commission’s More Effective Social Services inquiry report which was released today.

“More Effective Social Services supports the idea that it may be the services that are hard to reach rather than the whānau”, says Mr Flavell.

The independent report looks at the entire social services system and advocates for system-wide change to social services. The report highlights Whānau Ora as an innovative approach to reaching whānau that other social services have struggled to reach.

“This is exactly our intention with the Whānau Ora approach – supporting the strengths that exist within Māori communities to create change for themselves”, says Mr Flavell.

Mr Flavell says the report confirms the findings in Understanding Whānau Centred Approachesreport released last week “that Whānau Ora holds much potential to improve Māori wellbeing and to make a positive difference to those who need it most”.

“I am pleased that this independent report recognises Whānau Ora as an innovative model, recognising the value of navigators and the value of devolving management control (mana whakahaere) to commissioning agencies,” he says.
