MP welcomes tree back to Maungakiekie/One Tree Hill
MP for Maungakiekie Peseta Sam Lotu-Iiga has welcomed the announcement that One Tree Hill is to get its tree back.
“Thanks to a bill passed by our government, this Auckland icon will be restored,” says Mr Lotu-Iiga.
In 2014, Parliament passed the Ngā Mana Whenua o Tāmaki Collective Settlement Bill, which paved the way for replanting on Maungakiekie/One Tree Hill.
“Auckland Council previously said there would be no re-planting before Māori interests in Maungakiekie/One Tree Hill were resolved. This law addressed those interests and allowed Māori, the Crown and the people of Maungakiekie to look forward,” Mr Lotu-Iiga says.
“This is a significant day for our local community, Auckland and New Zealand.”
A grove of pohutukawa and totara trees will be planted on the summit of Maungakiekie/One Tree Hill during Matariki in June next year, with one expected to eventually dominate.
