Security guard’s death must lead to change
Adding the security industry to the list of high risk industries under the Health and Safety Reform Act would be the best memorial for slain 22-year-old Charanpreet Singh Dhaliwal, Te Atatu MP Phil Twyford says.
“A coroner has just issued his findings on the death of the young security guard at a construction site in West Auckland in 2011.
“His findings that Charanpreet was hit on the head with a piece of wood at least once by one of the four men acquitted of his murder and his recommendation on better training, along with a code of practice for the security industry is the first bit of justice and accountability the judicial system has delivered in this sad case.
“Charanpreet’s family in India were not only devastated by his death but by the court acquitting those accused of his killing and letting the security company who employed him off the hook.
“This young man’s needless death exposes the hopeless lack of decent workplace health and safety protections in this country. His legacy could be better training and health and safety rules for security guards, plus a new high risk ranking for the industry,” Phil Twyford said.
