Government needs to act on Japanese whaling

The Government needs to object to Japan's latest expedition to slaughter minke whales in the Antarctic, says Labour’s Conservation Spokesperson Nanaia Mahuta

“Despite the International Court of Justice ruling that this cruel practice should cease, a hunt of approximately 300 whales has begun with a ‘scientific expedition’ leaving port today.

“Killing whales in the name of science has been widely rejected by the international community and the International Whaling Commission has placed a moratorium on the harvesting of these marine mammals.

"What is objectionable is that Japan has not hidden its desire to resume commercial whaling and simply thumbs its nose at the international community.

"Whaling is archaic. New Zealand should continue to apply its influence to stop whaling on this scale for ‘scientific purposes’,“ says Nanaia Mahuta.
