Select Committee inquiry into NZ’s future mobility announced

The Transport and Industrial Relations Select Committee is launching an inquiry into the Future of New Zealand’s Mobility, committee chair and MP for New Plymouth Jonathan Young announced today.

“Mobility of people and goods is integral to the prosperity of our country. It supports interconnectedness, growth, and trade,” Mr Young says.

“Technology and innovation is fast changing the way we live and work. For example, in transport it boosts growth and productivity, and safety.

“Emerging technologies have the power to change the way our growing cities are planned and function. With regional economies highly reliant on the efficient movement of freight, transport technologies and networks are critical to their success and well-being.

“The inquiry, beginning early next year, will investigate how changing transport technology, and social and economic trends can enhance productivity in the economy, reduce transport costs, and optimise transport infrastructure.

“It will also look at how technology can increase accessibility and social connectedness among people, save lives, reduce injuries and associated social costs, as well as reduce New Zealand’s carbon footprint and enhance our environment.

Opposition Transport Spokesperson Sue Moroney welcomed the enquiry saying “it is important that we take control of our future transport options and maximise the opportunities presented by new technologies in the interests of New Zealand and its people.”

The Transport and Industrial Relations Select Committee will consider future scenarios for both personal mobility and freight transport and consider what recommendations it should make on public policy implications.
