Bishop welcomes PM’s Rimutaka Cycle Trail fundinga

Chris Bishop is welcoming today’s announcement from Prime Minister John Key of $229,600 in funding for the Rimutaka cycle trail as part of the Maintaining the Quality of the Great Rides fund. The Government is investing almost $530,000 in 10 new projects to enhance and maintain the quality of the New Zealand Cycle Trail.

“This latest funding announcement is good news for Hutt Valley cyclists and lovers of the outdoors,” says Mr Bishop, the National List MP based in the Hutt Valley.

“It continues the Government’s commitment to ensuring cycling in the Hutt is an enjoyable and safe experience. Walking and cycling is a big part of the Hutt Valley’s future, with the number of cycle commuters in Wellington doubling since 2006.

“This additional focus on the Great Rides of New Zealand in the Rimutakas will help boost tourism and visitor numbers to the Hutt, bringing jobs and growth for the local economy.”

The announcement follows a $20 million investment from the Urban Cycleways Fund for cycling and walking networks across Wellington, including the Petone-Ngauranga cycleway, $4.5 million to accelerate the Wainuiomata Hill Cycleway, and the $43 million Haywards Interchange project to protect cyclists.

“This funding is another great example of Government agencies and the community working together to provide safe and enjoyable cycling experiences for the Hutt Valley. While we continue to invest strongly in upgrading our road and rail networks, cycling remains an important part of the blueprint for the Hutt’s growth and prosperity,” says Mr Bishop.

The next funding round will be in February 2016. More information can be found at: http://www.mbie.govt.nz/info-services/sectors-industries/tourism/nga-haerenga-new-zealand-cycle-trail
