Talley’s first to attempt to flout Mondayisation
It’s no surprise that Talley’s is the first employer to attempt to flout the Mondayisation of ANZAC and Waitangi Days, Labour’s Workplace Relations spokesperson Iain Lees-Galloway says.
“The Meat Workers Union has received a letter from Talley’s saying workers at its AFFCO Rangiuru plant could face disciplinary action if they refused to work yesterday’s Waitangi Day public holiday.
“Talley’s appear to be on shaky legal ground and this only proves they are prepared to push employment laws to breaking point.
“The letter from Talley’s management to union members was unnecessarily provocative and threatening.
“There is no provision in the collective employment agreement for workers to be compelled to work on a public holiday.
“Talley’s have been directed by the Employment Court to adhere to that collective agreement yet they continue to act as if it does not exist. It’s about time they started acting like a responsible employer – that’s what the Court told them to do.
“Labour reiterates our call for Talley’s to come back to the bargaining table and once again offers our support to bring this long running and destructive dispute to an end,” Iain Lees-Galloway says.
