Bishop encourages applications for 2016 Youth Awards

National List MP based in the Hutt Valley Chris Bishop is encouraging Hutt Valley locals to nominate outstanding young people and people who have made a real difference for youth for a national 2016 Youth Award.

“These national awards are an opportunity to recognise and celebrate people across seven categories for their contribution to our community,” Mr Bishop says.

“I am a big believer in our young people and their capacity to contribute to New Zealand. Locally I established the Hutt City Youth Awards in 2015 to recognise those young people who are shining lights in the Hutt.

“Too often our youth get a bad reputation. I think we need to celebrate and encourage their successes through initiatives like the national Youth Awards and Hutt City Youth Awards.”

Nominations are open to all New Zealanders and close on 18 April. Winners of the 2016 Youth Awards will be announced at an official ceremony at Parliament on 24 May.

“This is a fantastic opportunity for you to put forward someone who is making a difference,” Mr Bishop says.

“Last year Charlizza Harris from Lower Hutt was awarded the Change Maker Award for founding 2FACE Drama, an organisation which builds leadership and life skills amongst young people. Charlizza’s philosophy is to encourage other youth to take on leadership positions, and today I’m encouraging Hutt Valley locals to nominate young leaders for these awards.

“2FACE Drama also won the Youth Group Award so we have a strong history of winners in the Hutt. I will also be encouraging all nominees from the Hutt City Youth Awards to have somebody put their names forward.

“By volunteering and leading significant projects in our community, young people are not only making a positive contribution, they are building essential skills and attributes for life.

“National believes in supporting young Kiwis to develop their decision-making, leadership, and innovation.”
