ACT Leader David Seymour today congratulated Paul Foster-Bell on the passage of his Private Member’s bill, with regret that it was necessary.
“This is the second time in a year that we’ve had to rush a bill through parliament because our prudish alcohol law doesn’t work for the responsible majority.
“I note that none of the predictions of riots and disorder made over my Rugby World Cup amendment bill were remotely accurate.
“In fact, alcohol consumption is at an all-time low, including for youth. Binge drinking has declined, and these trends began well before the current laws.
“Add to that the cancellation of the New Zealand Beer Festival under a swag of red tape, and it is clear that it’s time to revisit our liquor laws. Responsible drinkers, brewers, and hospitality operators must not be punished for the actions of an irresponsible minority.”
