Peters Renews Offer to National on RMA Reform

Given the submissions made by former National Party leader Don Brash on the Resource Legislation Amendment Bill today, New Zealand First is renewing its offer to the National Party to settle the most important issue in this term of Parliament and probably in modern New Zealand politics, says New Zealand First Leader and MP for Northland Rt Hon Winston Peters.

“Dr Brash pointed to the serious inconsistencies between what National said they were going to do and what they are now going to do.

“He said the bill now was so watered down to be meaningless, but worse, again sets off down the path to separatism.

“Enormous environmental economic and social consequences will result from such anaemic legislative proposals as well as those aspects based on ethnic preference and privilege.

“In my Orewa speech (26th January) and the Agcarm speech (24th February), and now today, we are offering the government a chance to ensure RMA reform acts in the interests, of all New Zealanders, and equal treatment before the law.

“During and after the Northland by-election the National Party said there was no chance of RMA reform if New Zealand First won. That claim was false.

“The lesson here for every National Party voter is that your party would rather give separate rights away to Maori than work with me and my team to fix the RMA. They’d rather ignore me, than help you. It’s really quite pathetic,” said Mr Peters.

“If that is not the lesson National wants to put out then New Zealand First expects to hear from them.”
