Waitangi Site Should Be Free to All
The government must provide funding in next month’s Budget to ensure access to Waitangi, the birthplace of the nation, is free to all New Zealanders, says New Zealand First Leader and Northland Member of Parliament Rt Hon Winston Peters.
“It is unacceptable that the public, and this includes tourists, must pay to visit the site where New Zealand’s founding document was signed,” Mr Peters said in a speech to Grey Power members in Kerikeri this afternoon.
“The Treaty Grounds are looked after by the Waitangi National Trust which has been forced to charge the public.
“New Zealanders and overseas tourists visiting our national museum in Wellington, Te Papa, are not charged.
“Waitangi is this country’s most historic site.
“Making Kiwi adults pay $20 each and tourists $40 at Waitangi does not reflect well on us as a nation when other nations make no charge for the public to view their most historic sites,” says Mr Peters.
