Tertiary Institution Council Appointments

Tertiary Education, Skills and Employment Minister Steven Joyce today announced three new appointments and five re-appointments to five tertiary education institution councils.

“I welcome the valuable knowledge and experience that the new appointees will bring into their new roles. I also welcome the reappointment of a number of council members in recognition of the high-quality leadership they have been providing to these institutions,” Mr Joyce says.

“I also wish to recognise and thank the outgoing council members for their service and valuable contributions.”

The appointments and reappointments of council members are:

• Eastern Institute of Technology: the reappointment of Mr RossMcKelvie as a member.

• Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology: the appointment of council appointee Mr Daryl Wehner as Chair, the reappointment of Mr Andrew Rowe as a member and Deputy Chair, the reappointment of Ms Gabrielle Hervey as a member, and the new appointment of Mr Charles Newton as a member.

• NorthTec: the reappointment of Mr Warren Moyes as a member.

• Southern Institute of Technology: the new appointment of Ms AimeeKaio as a member.

• Universal College of Learning: the reappointment of Ms Pamela Jefferies as a member.

Eastern Institute of Technology

Ross McKELVIE is a Napier businessman who has had numerous interests in the tourism industry and currently holds the Youth and Vocational office in the Napier Rotary Club. He was a member of the New Zealand Tourism Advisory Group and a member of the Napier Tourism Forum. Mr McKelvie chairs Eastern Institute of Technology’s Audit, Finance and Risk Committee.

Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology

Daryl WEHNER is the Chief Financial Officer at Port Nelson. Mr Wehner’scareer has seen him take on commercial roles as CFO, general manager and in corporate performance with companies that include Deloitte, Fletcher Challenge subsidiary Fletcher Development and Construction, Enerco Gas Central, and most recently with the Cawthron Institute. He is a Chartered Accountant, member of the Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand, and a member of the Institute of Directors.

Andrew ROWE is Chief Executive Officer of Cuddon Limited, a general engineering, irrigation, refrigeration and freeze dry equipment manufacturing company. In his earlier career, Mr Rowe spent ten years working in a number of roles for Safe Air Limited. Mr Rowe is also a board member of Hockey New Zealand and President of the Blenheim Rotary Club.

Gabrielle HERVEY spent ten years as the Managing Director of World ofWearableArt. Ms Hervey is Deputy Chair of the Suter Art Gallery Trust Board and chairs the Marketing Committee for Wine Nelson. Previous governance roles have included chairing boards for the Nelson School of Music and Nelson College and being an Arts Marketing Trustee. Ms Hervey was a founding member of award-winning local radio station Fifeshire FM (now More FM) and has lived and worked overseas.

Charles NEWTON has his own consulting practice that undertakes educational contracts, specialising in strategic development and innovation. His work supports educators, regional initiatives and government policy development. Mr Newton is contributing to the Ministry of Education’s Communities of Learning initiative and advises their Connected Learning Advisory, which promotes the use of digital technologies in teaching. A former Principal of Nayland College, throughout his career Mr Newton has contributed to policy development around NCEA, C21st Buildings, Special Education, pathways for alienated students and Future Schools.

NorthTec

Warren MOYES is the Chair of Chair of Northland Inc. (an economic development organisation for Northland) and owns and operates a deer and sheep farm. He has expertise in the electricity industry and in agriculture, having served on the boards of Northpower, Tonga Power and Deer Industry New Zealand over a substantial period. Mr Moyes has also held appointments in the teaching, tourism, boating and automotive industries.

Southern Institute of Technology

Aimee KAIO (Ngai Tahu, Tuhourangi, Ngati Whakaue, Nga Puhi) recently began working with Te Runanga o Ngai Tahu as part of the Tribal Economies team. Before this, Ms Kaio provided consultancy services, through her company NORA Ltd. Her career has predominantly been working for her hapuand in the Southland community; in enterprise development – in both the profit and not-for-profit sectors. Her governance and advisory board experience includes roles with Deep South (National Science Challenge), Murihiku Maori and Pasifika Cultural Trust, 1000 Days Trust, the Otago/Southland Community Response Forum and Awarua Whanau Services.

Universal College of Learning

Pamela JEFFERIES is a professional director and Fellow of the New Zealand Institute of Chartered Accountants. She has held a number of senior roles, including Chief Commissioner of the New Zealand Human Rights Commission, and Acting Chief Executive Officer and Chief Operations Manager for Specialist Education Services. Ms Jefferies’ extensive governance experience includes roles with the Bank of New Zealand, Wairarapa District Health Board,Metrowater Ltd, and the Legal Services Board.
