Where Are the Bridges Mr Bridges?

By-election promises are still sitting on National’s desk as accidents continue to occur at Northland’s one-way bridges, says New Zealand First Leader and MP for Northland Rt Hon Winston Peters.

“The failure to build 10 new two-lane bridges points to two facts: the promises were empty, and there was no detailed planning or costing involved – they were plucked out of thin air. There had been no intention to fix any bridges till the by-election occurred.

“National claimed it had put aside up to $69 million for the 10 bridges, so where is this money now?

“Had the promised bridges been planned they would have been well on the way to being built by now, instead we only have the planning and funding for the Kaeo and Taipa bridges and the two at Matakohe. It’s more than a year since the by-election and none have even been started.

“National owes an explanation to Northlanders, and all those involved in incidents at the bridges, including those affected in yesterday’s accident at Kaeo.”
