Serious Prisoner Assault Avoidable

Serious Prisoner Assault Avoidable

The latest serious prisoner-on-prisoner assault in the high security unit at Christchurch Prison was avoidable, says New Zealand First.

“Christchurch Prison is seriously short-staffed which is putting both staff and prisoners at risk,” says Corrections Spokesperson and former Senior Corrections Officer Mahesh Bindra.

“Staff are being seconded to Mt Eden prison, after private company Serco lost its management contract, many staff in Christchurch have to work extra shifts and there is a high turnover.

“Corrections staff are feeling vulnerable because violent offenders incarcerated long term believe they have nothing to lose and take any opportunity to misbehave.

“Serco has lost the contract to run Mt Eden and this government is putting the safety of all Corrections staff at risk because of it.

“Privately run prisons, with reduced staffing, do not work. Corrections needs more staff now and New Zealand First is looking forward to an upcoming budget announcement to that effect,” says Mr Bindra.
