Diversity and Inclusion Vital for Sport
It is a fantastic development for sport in New Zealand that NZ Rugby is leading a greater commitment to diversity and inclusion with their counterparts in rugby league, cricket, football, netball and hockey Labour’s Associate Sport and Recreation spokesperson Louisa Wall says.
In May last year, New Zealand Rugby was identified as a critical player to tackle homophobia in sport after a study revealed that gay men in New Zealand are more inclined to play rugby than in any other country and are the most likely to keep their sexuality secret in both youth and adult sports.
"This announcement is a very positive response to the issues of bullying from teammates and discrimination from coaches, officials and some members of the public which will ensure all young people can maximize the opportunity to play team sports.
"The commitment to diversity and inclusion in sport also provides an opportunity for all codes to look at the representation of women throughout their organisations and challenges them to provide pathways for participation by people with disabilities and new migrant and refugee groups.
"Sport bodies need to encourage and provide opportunities for all people to participate and enjoy the benefits of teamwork and socialisation. These benefits cannot be underestimated and are essential for cohesion in our society.
"As a former Silver Fern and Black Fern, I believe that all New Zealanders deserve the right to play sport in a manner that values full inclusiveness. Sport provides a bridge across diversity and difference and ensuring a welcome and safe environment for all players, officials and the public is vital for the sustainability of sport across all codes," Louisa Wall says.
